Jose Rosales (Heredia, Costa Rica, 1993) is a visual artist based in San José, Costa Rica. He has a degree in Art and Visual Communication with an emphasis in Sculpture from the National University of Costa Rica. His work deals with the ways in which certain bodies are characterized as divergent or not fully recognized as autonomous, and the political forces and structures that seek to normalize them. His practice is informed by the intersection between the aesthetics of power and popular culture, often appropriating images from the mass media, and mass-produced objects, which he reuses to make visible the experience of bodies subjected to structural violence and destruction of nature. In 2023 he received the Francisco Amighetti national award for his work “Pequeño Fin del Mundo”, granted by the Costa Rican Ministry of Culture. He has participated in residencies at TEOR/ética, San José, 2018 and Gasworks, London, 2019.
