There is a unique concentration of cultural producers of the arts from Costa Rica. I have always known this, as I work with them, but it seem as if this rich cultural history is not reaching so many newcomers.
COVER LETTERS brings together 17 artists, from emerging to established careers, producers of a variety of techniques, all committed to remarkable practices. Some of the artists featured are already in established private institutional collections, both international and national. This is a one night introduction from my community to yours.
Memories come back and I begin to picture things happening, the raw canvas hanging on strings, no wood to make it firm and proper. I make a list and map out, in my own terms, some sort of architectural drawing. I start out with studio visits, where I can register thoroughly the artist’s work. I know what I want, and who I want to bring. This is a case study. Quality and compromise aside, three factors helped me bring together who and what I wanted to show, a balance between gender, first. Second, what meets my eye and third, a variety of techniques I wish to join together in dialogue. There is no common topic, but there is a need for rich color, texture, shapes, clean lines, and figurative constructions. I am trusting my own lead.
